• Usage Allocations: Activity draws directly from your subscription’s included capacity. Pro accounts enjoy interactive command sessions subject to five-hour usage limits shared with Claude app use, while Claude Max provides 5x or 20x the Pro usage for heavy full-time coding.
• Best For: Individual software engineers conducting interactive, human-steered terminal development during normal business hours.

2. Metered Usage Credits (Subscription Overflow)

• How It Works: Pro and Max subscribers can enable metered Usage Credits in their account settings. When high-intensity coding sessions exhaust the included allocation, Claude Code automatically transitions to drawing from prepaid usage credits without interrupting ongoing tasks.
• Cost Protection: Users can establish strict monthly spend limits (e.g., $10, $25, or $50) to prevent accidental billing escalation.

3. Anthropic Console API Authentication (Pay-As-You-Go)

• How It Works: Developers sign in with a Claude Console account or export an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY into their shell environment. Claude Code then operates on standard per-token API pricing ($4.00 / million input tokens and $20.00 / million output tokens for Claude Opus 5.5; $2.00 and $10.00 for Claude Sonnet 5.5, the same as Sonnet 5).
• Prompt Caching Advantage: Claude Code automatically leverages Anthropic's prompt caching architecture. Repetitive repository indexing and large context reads are billed at the cache-read rate—$0.20 per million tokens on Opus 5.5 and $0.10 on Sonnet 5.5, 95% below each model's base input rate—dramatically reducing daily terminal development costs.
• Best For: High-volume unattended scripts, headless CI/CD automation, teams requiring unified corporate API billing, and developers who exceed subscription session caps.

4. Fast Mode Throughput

• How It Works: Fast Mode is a research-preview option that provides significantly faster output on Claude Opus 5.5, Opus 5, and Opus 4.8 on the Claude API.
• Cost Profile: Fast Mode carries premium pricing—$8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens on Opus 5.5, or $10 and $50 on Opus 5 and Opus 4.8. Subscribers pay for it with usage credits rather than included plan usage, so it suits latency-critical sessions such as release cutovers or live incident mitigation.

Security boundaries, bash permissions, and safety controls

Because Claude Code has the ability to execute shell commands and modify local files, Anthropic implements rigorous defense-in-depth security guardrails:

• Interactive Command Confirmation: By default, Claude Code pauses and displays exact shell commands before execution (e.g., git commit, rm, npm install, or database migrations), requiring explicit developer confirmation (y/n).
• Autonomous Execution Mode (--dangerously-skip-permissions): For trusted, sandboxed container environments or headless Docker instances, developers can enable non-interactive execution.
