Stay with the benchmark
Stay with n8n when your team can maintain its workflows and needs control over the execution environment. Self-hosting remains a practical boundary for private infrastructure and dependencies you manage yourself. A switch should solve a recurring ownership problem large enough to justify rebuilding working automation. n8n hosting documentation.
If server maintenance is the only problem, evaluate n8n Cloud first. It preserves the product your builders know, but does not reproduce every self-hosted capability. Cloud Code nodes cannot import external npm modules beyond the supplied crypto and moment modules; Cloud Python cannot import standard-library or third-party libraries. Audit those dependencies before moving. Code node documentation.
Workflow depth can also favor staying: n8n's paid plans meter complete workflow executions rather than each individual step. However, execution allowances do not make model usage free. Gateway credits fund supported runtime services separately from AI Assistant credits; your own provider credentials introduce the provider's bill. n8n pricing and Gateway credits.
When to switch
Make is the first trial for buyers who want visual orchestration they can inspect and hand over to an operations team. Its routers, filters, visual builder and execution monitoring support that route. Complex mapping and exception handling still require an owner; changing canvases does not eliminate workflow design. Make features and plans.
Zapier is the first trial when managed app coverage and a no-code building experience matter most. Its published catalog covers more than 9,000 apps, but the decisive check is whether the exact trigger, action and fields you need are supported. A catalog entry alone does not establish replacement coverage. Zapier platform and pricing.
Gumloop is the narrower route for AI-first no-code work: agents using connected tools and data, with workflows available for defined processes. Its documentation still explains the visual workflow canvas, while its pricing page labels Workflows as Legacy. Trial the agent experience and confirm the workflow feature's availability and support direction before committing a deterministic n8n estate. Gumloop documentation, workflow guide and pricing.
Switching becomes worthwhile when another person can troubleshoot and maintain the replacement with less specialist help. Hosted services move platform operations to a vendor, but your team still owns connection permissions, failed business actions, data handling and incident response. Make those responsibilities explicit before treating easier setup as lower operating effort.
How to read the shortlist
The shortlist routes by buyer need: visual orchestration, managed integration breadth, or AI-first work. Its migration estimates assume an existing multi-step n8n workflow, not a blank project. Medium means rebuilding mappings, conditions and connections; high means substantial redesign. Custom nodes, private services and long-running code can raise either estimate.
Treat exports as a reference for reconstruction. n8n documents its own JSON import/export, and Make documents its own blueprints and reconnection requirements. Neither establishes direct compatibility between their workflow formats. Preserve the business rules, then rebuild and test expressions, loops, schedules, webhook behavior and custom code in the destination. n8n export/import and Make blueprints.
The usage-based labels describe cost sensitivity, not a claim that the alternatives sell identical units. Make credits can depend on operations, tokens or processing time. Zapier uses a shared task allocation with rates that vary by action. Gumloop distinguishes workflow node charges from agent model, tool, compute and orchestration charges. Compare the same completed business outcome. Make credits, Zapier pricing and Gumloop credits.
Final selection method
Rebuild one representative workflow with sanitized data. Include a loop, a failed request, a retry and a human approval if the production process needs them. Ask the intended maintainer to locate the failure and recover without duplicate writes. Record the actual migration work and usage; the recommendations here are based on documentation, not hands-on benchmark results.
Reauthorize connections deliberately. Check who owns each account, whether colleagues can use it, and what happens when its owner leaves. Verify hosting region, execution-log retention, model-provider data handling and required access controls for the exact plan. Gumloop offers an optional Enterprise VPC route, which should be evaluated on its own terms rather than assumed equivalent to operating n8n yourself. Gumloop deployment options.
Price normal and peak volumes, including retries, loops, AI calls, overages and staff time. Match currency, credit or task selector, billing cadence and required governance tier before comparing totals. Use the published pricing guides for n8n, Make, Zapier and Gumloop to organize the purchase check, then confirm the vendor's checkout terms.
