The core caveat is that model access, usage, and Work availability vary by plan, surface, workspace policy, and rollout state, and important outputs still require review. Start with the lowest ChatGPT subscription that proves the workflow, use Work when a task needs sustained execution, and move into a managed workspace when governance matters. Codex remains the dedicated path for repository and terminal work. The OpenAI API is a separate, metered developer service; a ChatGPT subscription does not include API usage.

GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, with expanded access on Pro. GPT-6.1 Sol, released 2026-09-29, is listed on Plus and Pro and is rolling out to Business, Enterprise and Edu. Since 2026-10-07 ChatGPT Chat itself runs GPT-6 Sol on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go, with Free and Go rolling out from 2026-10-08. GPT-6.1 Sol is not yet available in Chat, and GPT-6 Sol remains available. Availability and limits follow your plan and workspace settings.
Does ChatGPT Work replace regular ChatGPT?
No. Chat remains the fast surface for questions and conversation. Work is an agent inside ChatGPT for longer research, analysis, and finished deliverables.
How do ChatGPT Work and Codex differ?
Work handles broader research and deliverables across apps, files, and business workflows. Codex remains the dedicated agent for repositories, terminals, tests, code changes, and software review.
Where is ChatGPT Work available?
The unified macOS and Windows desktop app offers Chat, Work, and Codex on every plan, with limited Work access on Free and Go. Eligible paid plans receive Work on web and mobile through a gradual rollout.
Does a ChatGPT subscription include OpenAI API usage?
No. ChatGPT subscriptions and workspaces use a separate billing system from the OpenAI API. API token usage must be purchased and managed independently.
Do GPT-6 models replace every existing ChatGPT model?
No blanket replacement was announced. GPT-6.1 Sol is an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol for Work and Codex, and GPT-6 Sol remains available; Luna covers high-volume tasks and Astra frontier reasoning. OpenAI has not released a GPT-6.1 Astra. Previous models remain accessible during the transition, so check the model picker in your specific Chat, Work, or Codex workspace.
