Claude Usage Limits by Plan: Free vs Pro vs Max 5x vs 20x

Anthropic publishes no Claude message counts. Pro and Max have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit shared with Claude Code; Max 5x and 20x give 5x and 20x Pro’s per-session allowance. See how Fable, Opus and usage credits change the limits.

Guide

Start with the spend threshold and the conditions that change the pricing decision.

Anthropic does not publish a fixed number of messages for any Claude plan. Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually) and Max have two limits: a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week. Max 5x ($100) gives five times Pro's per-session allowance and Max 20x ($200) gives twenty times. Claude in the browser, the desktop and mobile apps, and Claude Code all draw on the same limits.

Anthropic states the Max multiples against Pro's per-session allowance. It does not state a weekly multiple, so do not assume Max 20x gives exactly twenty times Pro's weekly usage. Max is sold monthly only. Pro and Max both include priority access at busy times, and Max adds higher output limits and early access to new features. The Free plan has Sonnet and Haiku but not Opus.

How the session and weekly limits work

The number of messages you can send depends on how much work each one takes. Anthropic says usage is affected by the length and complexity of the conversation, the size of attached files, the features you use, the model you choose and the effort level. A long chat with large files can reach the session limit after a few messages; short questions on a lighter model go much further.

  • Session limit: resets every five hours.
  • Weekly limit: applies across all models and resets at a day and time assigned to your account. That time stays the same no matter when you subscribed or start working, and you can see the next reset in Settings, then Usage.
  • Other caps: Anthropic reserves the right to limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or limits on particular models and features.
  • Limit resets: Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a free reset that restores the session or weekly limit at once. It appears in Settings, then Usage, and expires on the date shown.

Fable, Opus and the model you choose

The model you pick changes how fast you use your allowance. Opus uses noticeably more than Sonnet, and Anthropic's Claude Code guidance recommends Sonnet for most coding work and Opus for the hardest problems.

Fable models follow different rules on each plan. On Max, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are a standard part of the plan, but you can spend at most 50% of your weekly limit on them, and they draw that allowance down faster than other models. That is a cap within the weekly limit, not extra usage. On Pro, Fable models are not covered by the plan's limits at all and run only on pay-as-you-go usage credits. Fable is not available on Free.

Claude Code uses the same allowance

Pro and Max include Claude Code in the terminal and in supported IDEs such as VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains. Everything you do in Claude Code counts against the same session and weekly limits as your chats, so a long coding session in the afternoon leaves less for Claude on the web that evening.

Two details catch people out:

  • If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, and the work is billed at API rates rather than counted against your plan.
  • The monthly API credits that come with Max cannot be spent in Claude Code or the Claude apps. They apply to the Claude API, not to plan limits.

For when a subscription or API billing is the cheaper route for coding, see Claude Code subscription versus API pricing.

What to do when you hit a limit

  1. Check which limit you reached. Claude warns you as you approach a limit and shows when the session or weekly limit resets.
  2. Switch to a lighter model for routine work: Sonnet or Haiku instead of Opus.
  3. Trim the context. Start a new chat when a long one is no longer needed, turn off tools and connectors you are not using, and lower the effort level. In Claude Code, run /clear between tasks and /compact mid-task.
  4. Turn on usage credits on Pro or Max to keep working past a limit at standard API rates. You can set a monthly spending cap, and prepaid bundles cost 10% to 30% less ($45 for $50 of usage, $200 for $250 and $700 for $1,000).
  5. Upgrade if you hit the limit most weeks: Pro to Max 5x, or Max 5x to Max 20x.

Which plan fits your usage

  • Free suits occasional chats on Sonnet or Haiku. It has no Claude Code, Opus or Fable.
  • Pro suits daily writing, research and light coding with Opus and Claude Code. If you want Fable regularly, budget for usage credits or look at Max.
  • Max 5x suits people who reach Pro's session limit several times a week, or who want Fable as part of the plan.
  • Max 20x suits all-day use, such as long Claude Code sessions most working days. Move up from Max 5x only after you see the weekly limit stopping you.

Team plans pool billing for organizations. Their premium seats carry five times the usage of standard seats, and Enterprise can also be bought on usage-based billing. Per-model API rates and every plan price are on Claude pricing. If you are weighing a subscription against paying per token, see Claude Pro and Max versus API pricing.

FAQ

Common questions

How many messages can I send on Claude Pro?

Anthropic does not publish a number. Pro has a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models. How many messages fit depends on conversation length, attached files, the features and model you use and the effort level, so long chats on Opus reach the limit much sooner than short questions on Sonnet.

What is the difference between Claude Max 5x and Max 20x?

Max 5x costs $100 a month and gives five times Pro’s per-session usage allowance; Max 20x costs $200 and gives twenty times. Both reset the session limit every five hours, have a weekly limit and a separate weekly Fable limit, include Claude Code and are billed monthly only.

Does Claude Code share limits with the Claude app?

Yes. On Pro and Max, Claude Code in the terminal or an IDE counts against the same five-hour session limit and weekly limit as Claude on the web, desktop and mobile. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code bills that API key instead of using your plan.

When does the Claude weekly limit reset?

At a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which stays the same regardless of when you subscribed or start using Claude. You get your full weekly allowance each cycle, and Settings then Usage shows the next reset time.

Can I use Claude Fable on the Pro plan?

Only with usage credits. On Pro, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are not covered by the plan’s limits and run on pay-as-you-go credits at API rates. On Max they are part of the plan, capped at 50% of your weekly limit. Fable is not available on Free.

Can I keep using Claude after I hit a limit?

On Pro and Max, yes, if you enable usage credits: requests switch to standard API rates until your monthly spending cap or prepaid balance runs out. Otherwise wait for the five-hour or weekly reset, switch to a lighter model, or upgrade to Max. Max’s monthly API credits do not cover this.
