Grok Usage Limits by Plan: Free vs SuperGrok, Plus and Heavy

xAI publishes no fixed Grok message or video counts. Since June 2026 paid plans share one weekly usage pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and API. See what each plan adds, how the pool resets and what to do when you run out.

UpdatedOctober 10, 2026

xAI does not publish fixed message, image or video counts for any Grok plan. Since June 2026, paid plans draw from one weekly usage pool that you can spend on any mix of Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and API work. It is shown as a percentage used and resets once a week. Free users get "generous limits" with their own reset schedule. SuperGrok ($30 a month) raises limits across every feature, and SuperGrok Plus ($100) gives "significantly higher usage". SuperGrok Heavy has the highest usage of the individual plans.

The only fixed ratio xAI gives between tiers is SuperGrok's "5x longer conversations in Chat" compared with Lite. It publishes no multiple for Plus or Heavy over SuperGrok, so treat any page that quotes one as a guess. Business and Enterprise are team plans, with Enterprise offering custom rate limits. Current prices for every tier are on Grok pricing.

How the weekly usage pool works

Before June 2026, each Grok product had its own daily limit, so you could run out of Imagine while still having Chat left. Paid plans now share one weekly allowance:

  • One pool for every product: spend the whole week's allowance on one product or across several. There is no separate cap for Chat, Imagine, Voice or Build.
  • Different costs per action: a chat message uses little compute, while a high-quality video or a long coding task in Build uses far more.
  • Shown as a percentage: Settings, then Usage (on the web and in the apps), shows a progress bar, a breakdown by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine and Voice), your weekly reset date and time, and any Extra Usage Credits.
  • Weekly reset: the pool refills once a week on the schedule shown in the Usage tab.

Video quality has its own cap. Each tier has a cap on 720p videos, and after you reach it, 720p requests fall back to 480p.

What happens when you reach the weekly limit

Paid features pause until the weekly reset, but you are not locked out:

  1. Free-tier Chat and Voice keep working. Their limits are separate from the paid pool and reset on their own schedule.
  2. Buy Extra Usage Credits to continue paid features immediately. You can buy as little as $5 on the web (not yet in the mobile apps). Credits are used only after the weekly allowance runs out and expire one year after purchase.
  3. Turn on Auto Top Up to add credits automatically when your balance runs low, up to a monthly cap you choose.
  4. Upgrade to a higher plan for a larger weekly allowance.

xAI notes that Extra Usage Credits are priced at standard rates, so each action costs more than it does inside your plan's weekly allowance. It recommends upgrading if you regularly run past the limit, and keeping top-ups for occasional overruns.

Which plan fits your usage

  • Free suits trying Grok with real-time web and X search (limited on Free), voice, image generation and Grok Build. It has no video generation, Expert mode or Grok Bot.
  • SuperGrok Lite suits light paid use that needs video generation and Expert mode but not Grok Bot. xAI's pricing page does not list its price, so check it at checkout.
  • SuperGrok suits daily chat, Expert mode, 720p video and Grok Bot. It is the plan xAI marks most popular.
  • SuperGrok Plus suits people who empty the SuperGrok pool most weeks, or who need 1080p video and priority at peak times.
  • SuperGrok Heavy suits the heaviest individual use. If you already pay for X Premium+, note that Heavy includes it, and that linking your X account lets Grok apply X subscription benefits.

The Usage tab lists API among the products that draw on the weekly pool, while developer accounts in the xAI console buy API credits and pay per token separately. For how the two ledgers differ, see Grok subscription versus xAI API pricing. For what you can do without paying, see Is Grok free?

FAQ

Common questions

How many messages can I send on SuperGrok?

xAI does not publish a message count. Since June 2026 paid Grok plans draw from one weekly usage pool shared by Chat, Imagine, Voice, Build and API, and each action uses an amount that depends on its compute. Settings then Usage shows the percentage used and a breakdown by product.

When do Grok usage limits reset?

The paid weekly pool resets once a week on the schedule shown in the Usage tab of Settings. Free-tier limits on Chat and Voice are separate from the paid pool and reset on their own schedule.

What happens when I hit the Grok weekly limit?

Paid features pause until the weekly reset, but free-tier Chat and Voice keep working. You can buy Extra Usage Credits on the web from $5, which expire a year after purchase, turn on Auto Top Up with a monthly cap, or upgrade to a plan with a larger weekly allowance.

How much more usage does SuperGrok Plus give than SuperGrok?

xAI describes SuperGrok Plus ($100 a month) as giving significantly higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build than SuperGrok ($30), plus 1080p video and priority at peak times, but publishes no multiple. The only stated ratio is SuperGrok’s five times longer Chat conversations compared with SuperGrok Lite.

Does Grok Free include video generation?

No. xAI’s plan comparison lists video generation on SuperGrok Lite and higher plans, not on Free. Free includes image generation, voice, Grok Build and limited real-time web and X search, but not Expert mode or Grok Bot.

Are Extra Usage Credits cheaper than upgrading?

Usually not for regular use. xAI prices Extra Usage Credits at standard rates, so each action costs more than inside a plan’s weekly allowance, and it recommends upgrading if you often exceed the limit. Credits suit occasional overruns.
