Decision guide
Compare the strongest case for each tool and focus on the requirements that matter most to your workflow.
Starting point
ChatGPT should stay the baseline when Coding and analysis and Writing and editing matter most to the purchase.
Our preference for a workflow that also needs a dedicated Codex coding experience and Work deliverables.
Our preference when document work is one part of a varied Chat and Work workflow, not a universal prose-quality claim.
When to switch
Perplexity becomes the sharper call when Personal pricing and Live research and citations outweigh the baseline strengths.
Pro is $20 monthly or $200 annually; the advantage here is its annual price versus twelve monthly Plus payments.
Our preference for repeated source discovery and linked-answer inspection; no measured accuracy advantage is claimed.

Editorial analysis

Analysis note
Focus on the exceptions, pricing differences, and workflow constraints that could change the recommendation.
ChatGPT is our default choice for a buyer who wants one account for a varied set of conversational, deliverable and coding tasks. Perplexity is our preferred shortlist candidate when repeatedly finding and inspecting current sources is the main job. This is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that ChatGPT cannot research or that Perplexity cannot create files.
Both products have expanded beyond those old stereotypes. The useful comparison begins with the last step of your recurring task and works backward to the evidence and context it needs.
For a vendor shortlist or weekly market brief, the output must make consequential claims inspectable. Perplexity's Pro Search offers source-linked answers and access to multiple model families. We favor that search-centered workflow when moving between questions and supporting pages is the recurring activity. This is not a measured citation-count or accuracy advantage.
Do not equate every Perplexity mode with manual model selection. Research chooses models automatically. Pick a mode for the investigation, and open the pages behind the decisive claims before relying on the report.
ChatGPT's deep research also supports cited reports and source controls. If that already meets the source-review requirement, there is no automatic need for a second subscription. Use the same research question to compare the work left for you, including missing sources and unsupported inferences.
ChatGPT's Chat, Work and Codex experiences support different stages of a broader workflow. Our default favors the buyer who repeatedly needs those stages, such as turning research into a spreadsheet, revising a report and working with code. Eligibility and device matter, and the experiences should not be mistaken for a single shared conversation history.
Perplexity has its own file-creation capabilities and Computer task workflow. It can therefore remain useful beyond a sourced summary. The comparison is whether its editing, export and execution path meets your final requirement. A generated presentation is only valuable once its content and formatting work for the recipient.
For either product, repeat one task through that final handoff. Inspect the document, calculations or code rather than awarding the purchase to whichever assistant produces a confident first response. The table's writing, coding and multimodal preferences describe the combination of workflows we would trial first, not measured output superiority.
Perplexity Pro's $200 annual option is cheaper than paying for twelve months of ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month. That is the specific basis for Perplexity's personal-pricing advantage here. Monthly Pro and Plus are both $20. The comparison does not make Perplexity the lowest-cost entry: ChatGPT Go is $8 monthly in the US, with a different entitlement. See the current Perplexity purchase information and ChatGPT plan matrix for the route being compared.
For teams, compare Perplexity Enterprise billing with ChatGPT Business, including usage and administration. A lower seat charge is useful only when the plan covers the intended people and work. App subscriptions should not be treated as an API budget.
Choose Perplexity if the recurring source-review workflow is the reason to pay. Keep the ChatGPT default if varied downstream tasks justify its working environment. If you already use one of them, the Perplexity alternatives and ChatGPT alternatives guides address what a switch would require.

FAQ
Prefer Perplexity when its search-centered workflow improves repeated source discovery and inspection. ChatGPT also provides cited deep research; compare the actual task before adding another subscription.
ChatGPT Go is a lower-cost US entry at $8 monthly. The table gives Perplexity an advantage specifically for $200 annual Pro versus twelve $20 monthly Plus payments, not for the cheapest entry plan.
Price API usage separately from the application subscription. Compare the actual API billing route before building an integration.
Evaluate the required workflow, administration and complete cost. ChatGPT Standard Business has a lower listed seat price than Perplexity Enterprise Pro, but that only helps if the selected plan fits the work.
Yes, if its research and downstream workflow meet the actual requirement. Keep Perplexity when the source-review process or continuing research context remains useful enough to justify it.
