About Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. It is now one app for personal and work accounts, on the web, Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and the same assistant works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote for people whose Microsoft 365 plan includes it. The free version covers chat, image creation and file uploads, subject to capacity and limits Microsoft does not publish, and signing in is optional for chat.

Read the full profile

It suits people who already live in Microsoft 365, because Copilot's paid usage comes with the Microsoft 365 subscriptions for individuals rather than a separate AI plan, and Microsoft keeps its research and agent features, Researcher, Analyst and the Cowork preview, for the upper tiers.

The main caveat is that Microsoft describes Copilot usage only with labels such as Standard, More, Extensive and Highest, and its own pages sometimes rate the same plan differently. It publishes no message, image or credit counts.

Copilot for work accounts is bought separately. Copilot Chat comes at no extra cost with an eligible Microsoft 365 work or school subscription, Copilot in work apps and data is a per-user add-on, and agents and advanced experiences are billed on usage.

Best for
  • Microsoft 365 subscribers who want an assistant inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook without buying a separate AI plan
  • People who want a free assistant on the web, Windows, Mac and phone and can work within limits Microsoft does not publish
  • Businesses on Microsoft 365 that want Copilot Chat for every employee and paid Copilot seats only for heavier users

FAQ

Common questions

Is Microsoft Copilot free?

Yes, with limits. You can chat, create images and upload files in the Microsoft Copilot app for free, subject to available capacity and limits Microsoft does not publish. Signing in is optional for chat and unlocks chat history, more image creation, longer conversations and extended voice sessions. At a limit, you can upgrade to a paid option or come back later.

What happened to Copilot Pro?

Microsoft no longer sells Copilot Pro. Existing subscribers could keep it until they cancelled or until support ended on August 1, 2026. For extensive Copilot use, Microsoft names Microsoft 365 Premium as one option: $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, with the Office apps and 2 TB of storage.

What does Microsoft 365 Premium add over Personal?

Researcher, Analyst and the Cowork preview, which Personal and Family do not include, plus room for up to six people with 2 TB of shared storage and more use of creative and voice features. Microsoft's support table rates image generation and Audio Overview Extensive on Premium and Standard on Personal, and voice and vision More instead of Standard. Cowork, available only in the US and Canada, is rated Limited on Premium and Highest on Pro.

Does everyone on Microsoft 365 Family get Copilot?

No. Family, Premium and Pro cover up to six people for the apps and storage, but AI benefits such as Copilot in the desktop apps stay with the subscription owner and cannot be shared. Members who share the plan can still use Chat at microsoft365.com.

How much does Microsoft 365 Copilot cost for business?

$21 a user a month, paid yearly, for Microsoft 365 Copilot Business, or $30 for Microsoft 365 Copilot, each an add-on to a Microsoft 365 plan you also pay for. Copilot Business covers organizations with up to 300 users and costs $25.20 a user a month on monthly billing; Microsoft lists $18 for the first year on annual commitments made from July 1 to December 31, 2026.

Is Copilot Chat free for work accounts?

Yes. Copilot Chat is included at no additional cost for Microsoft Entra users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, with fair use limits on some features, such as image generation. Agents are billed on usage, pay-as-you-go through an Azure subscription or in Copilot Studio packs of 25,000 Copilot Credits for $200 a month. Microsoft's meters page lists $0.01 per message, but Copilot Studio now counts Copilot Credits, and one grounded agent reply can use 12 credits.

Does Microsoft publish Copilot usage limits?

Not as numbers. Microsoft rates each Copilot feature per plan as Limited, Standard, More, Extensive or Highest usage, says limits can vary by feature, entry point and system conditions, and gives no message, image or AI credit counts. If you reach a feature limit or use all of your AI credits, that feature may be unavailable until your allowance resets; you can check your status under Services & subscriptions in your Microsoft account.

Does Microsoft 365 Basic include Copilot?

No. Microsoft says AI features are not available in Microsoft 365 Basic, so Copilot use beyond the free app starts with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
