Computer is the lower-access starting point. It can research, create files and apps, work through connected services, and run asynchronous or scheduled tasks in an isolated cloud environment. It does not need a local desktop to remain online, so it fits workflows centered on the web, email, calendars, cloud documents, and supported connectors.

Personal Computer expands the boundary to a specific machine, but the current feature set is not identical across operating systems. On both Windows and Mac, the app can work with folders you authorize, provide a floating task bar and voice, expose desktop context, and make the device available through Remote Access. On Mac, Perplexity also documents control of installed apps such as Mail, Finder, Slack, Messages, and Notes, plus Comet browser control. On Windows, Perplexity documents local Word, Excel, and other files, File Explorer, Microsoft 365, connected apps, and the web, but its Help Center explicitly says installed-app control is not yet available. That added local reach is the reason to choose the app; it is also the reason to grant permissions deliberately.

A Mac mini is optional, not a separate product. Perplexity’s current setup page says Personal Computer works on any Mac running macOS 15 or later, and its current Mac mini guide also requires macOS 15+. A stale July 16 Help Center article still says macOS 14+, so this page uses macOS 15+ as the conservative requirement until Perplexity reconciles its documentation. For continuous local-resource work, the selected Mac must stay online, awake, signed in, and running the app. Remote Access can start, continue, and monitor desktop work from another desktop, mobile device, or the web; sensitive actions may still wait for approval.

The underlying worker also handles model selection. Perplexity says Computer can create teams of agents across more than 20 frontier models and automatically select the combination for a task. Neither surface requires the buyer to choose one model manually for every workflow.

Security is a permission decision, not a brand label

Computer uses a secure, isolated cloud sandbox, but a sandbox does not remove the need to review what each connector can read or change. A task that can send email, inspect a calendar, or use a work service inherits the consequences of those permissions. Start with only the connectors the workflow needs and confirm the intended account before allowing a long-running task.

Personal Computer adds a local authorization boundary whose controls vary by operating system. On Mac, Perplexity describes on-device authorization for sensitive steps, while folder, installed-app, and browser access depend on permissions granted on that Mac. On Windows, local-file access requires Windows Sandbox to be provisioned and the local file system toggle enabled; Perplexity also says the app warns before sensitive actions such as sending email or deleting a file. “Desktop” should not be read as “everything stays on device”: review both the Perplexity account and the device permissions before using sensitive local data.

Enterprise Computer adds organization controls rather than changing this basic choice. Perplexity documents seat-based access, admin enablement, connector controls, SSO, audit logging, retention policies, model restrictions, and a no-training commitment for organization data. Those controls matter when the buyer is choosing a governed workspace, but they do not make a consumer Personal Computer setup an Enterprise substitute.

Plans and credits are shared decision context

Do not assume the two names represent independently priced products. The cited Personal Computer sources publish no separate price or credit schedule. The Computer article says an active subscription is required; the July 28 Windows announcement says Personal Computer is available to Pro, Max, and Enterprise subscribers on Windows 10 and 11; and the credits article says consumer Computer credits are available to Pro and Max subscribers. Confirm the actual entitlement and regional availability in the account before treating a desktop capability as included.

For consumer accounts, the current official credit guidance says Pro has no recurring monthly Computer-credit allocation after any applicable one-time bonus, while Max starts with 10,000 monthly credits. Perplexity currently equates 100 credits with $1. It also says task-cost bands are examples rather than guarantees, so estimate from the usage shown by representative tasks and set a spending limit before enabling automatic refills.

Choose Personal Computer when local access is the actual requirement: folders that are not in a cloud service, device-local files, desktop context, or a supported computer that must keep working with local resources. On Mac, it is also the choice when the job requires installed-app or Comet control. On Windows, choose it for the documented local-file, File Explorer, Microsoft 365, connected-app, web, and remote workflows without assuming installed-app control.
