Gemini 4 Argon vs Gemini 3.1 Pro: API Price, Output Limit and When to Switch
Gemini 4 Argon is Google's stable flagship and costs less than Gemini 3.1 Pro until November 30, 2026; from December 1 it costs $4/$20 per 1M tokens against 3.1 Pro's $2/$12, so short-prompt jobs get cheaper on 3.1 Pro.

In short
Move new work to Gemini 4 Argon unless cost per request decides it. Argon is Google's stable flagship (gemini-4-argon), while Gemini 3.1 Pro is still a preview model (gemini-3.1-pro-preview) with no shutdown date. Through November 30, 2026, Argon is also cheaper: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, against 3.1 Pro's $2 and $12. From December 1 Argon costs $4 and $20, which makes 3.1 Pro the cheaper model for prompts under 200,000 tokens and close to equal above that, where 3.1 Pro charges $4 and $18. Google's model card and product page carry no table comparing the two, so the case for Argon rests on its status, its 1M-token long decode and your own tests.

The December 1 price change reverses which model is cheaper
Per 1M tokens | Argon, to Nov 30, 2026 | Argon, from Dec 1, 2026 | 3.1 Pro, prompts up to 200K | 3.1 Pro, prompts over 200K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Input | $2 | $4 | $2 | $4 |
Output, including thinking | $10 | $20 | $12 | $18 |
Cached input | $0.10 | $0.20 | $0.20, plus $4.50 per 1M tokens an hour of storage | $0.40, plus storage |
Batch input / output | $1 / $5 | $2 / $10 | $1 / $6 | $2 / $9 |
Read across the output row: Argon is $2 cheaper than 3.1 Pro on output until November 30 and $8 dearer from December 1 on prompts under 200K. Argon has no long-prompt tier, so the gap narrows on very long inputs, where 3.1 Pro's price already rises.
Two illustrative requests, using these rates (ToolColumn arithmetic):
Request | Argon to Nov 30 | Argon from Dec 1 | 3.1 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
100K tokens in, 8K out | $0.28 | $0.56 | $0.30 |
500K tokens in, 20K out | $1.20 | $2.40 | $2.36 |
After December 1, Argon costs nearly twice as much as 3.1 Pro on the shorter request and about the same on the longer one. If most of your calls are short, run Argon's cost through your own token logs before switching everything.
Argon requests: 1M-token long decode, thinking levels, implicit caching only
- Output length. 3.1 Pro returns up to 65,536 tokens. Argon's long decode keeps generating up to 1M tokens minus the input; its per-request cap is 65,536 on the model page, but Google's latest-model guide gives 32,768 for non-streaming requests and 64K for streaming, so stream long answers.
- Thinking controls. Google's guide to Argon uses thinking levels,
low, medium(the default) andhigh. Athinking_budgetstill works but maps to the nearest level and returns a warning, and the guide tells you to removetemperature,top_p,top_kandcandidate_countfrom requests, so check any 3.1 Pro code that sets them. - Caching. Argon supports only implicit caching, with no explicit caches and no storage fee. If your 3.1 Pro code creates explicit caches, that code has to change, and you stop paying the hourly storage charge.
- Inputs. Argon takes text, images, video, audio and PDFs and returns text only. Computer use is in preview. Its knowledge cutoff is March 2026; the 3.1 Pro model page gives none.
Google's Argon tables leave 3.1 Pro out
Argon's model card compares it with GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5, not with 3.1 Pro, and Google's Gemini product page adds Gemini 4 Carbon instead. Google's model card calls Argon a new frontier model rather than a fine-tune of an earlier one, and the launch post claims a new state of the art on DeepSWE v1.1 (77.9%) and an output limit raised from the previous 64K tokens. None of those figures has a 3.1 Pro number beside it, so how much better Argon runs your prompts is something only your own logs will show.
In the Gemini app, AI Pro is the cheapest plan with Argon
Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99) add Argon next to the Pro model, which Google's plan page still describes as 3.1 Pro. AI Plus ($4.99) gets the Flash model and free accounts Flash-Lite, so neither includes Argon or 3.1 Pro. Google publishes no Argon-specific allowance: app limits refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and AI Pro has four times the standard usage. Argon is available in select countries.
For coding, Google's pages disagree about Antigravity: the Argon launch post names AI Ultra, and the Antigravity blog names AI Pro and Ultra. Check the model picker before upgrading for it.

FAQ
Common questions
Is Gemini 4 Argon better than Gemini 3.1 Pro?
Google's model card and Gemini product page carry no table comparing the two; they compare Argon with GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5 and Gemini 4 Carbon. Argon is Google's stable flagship reasoning model, a new model rather than a fine-tune, with long decode up to 1M output tokens, while 3.1 Pro remains a preview model.
Is Gemini 3.1 Pro being shut down?
Not yet. Google's deprecations page lists gemini-3.1-pro-preview with no shutdown date announced, and it is still priced on the Gemini API pricing page.
Is Gemini 4 Argon going up in price?
Yes. Argon costs $2 per 1M input tokens and $10 per 1M output tokens through November 30, 2026, and $4 and $20 from December 1, 2026. Batch and cached rates double on the same date.
Can I try Gemini 4 Argon or 3.1 Pro for free?
Neither is on the free tier of the Gemini API. Google says 3.1 Pro can be tested in Google AI Studio. Argon in AI Studio needs paid API billing or a Google AI plan, and Google's pages disagree on whether AI Pro or only Ultra gets it there.
What are the model IDs for Gemini 4 Argon and Gemini 3.1 Pro?
Argon is gemini-4-argon, a stable model. Gemini 3.1 Pro is gemini-3.1-pro-preview, with a gemini-3.1-pro-preview-customtools variant.
