Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) Limits by Plan: Free, Plus, Pro and Ultra

Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, fixes two numbers per plan: 100 notebooks of 50 sources on Free, up to 500 notebooks of 600 sources on Ultra. Chats and Studio outputs draw on a compute budget that refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly limit.

In short

Gemini Notebook, Google's new name for NotebookLM since July 2026, fixes only two numbers per plan: how many notebooks you can keep and how many sources each one holds. Free allows 100 notebooks of 50 sources, Google AI Plus 200 of 100, Google AI Pro 500 of 300, and Google AI Ultra 500 of 500 or 600. Chat answers and Studio outputs such as Video Overviews and slide decks draw on a compute budget that refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. Google gives that budget no number, only multiples: Plus gets twice the standard limits, Pro four times, and Ultra 5 or 20 times the Pro limits. Settings, then Usage, shows what you have left.

Read the table by the column you will run out of first: a few large research projects hit the source cap, while daily audio and video work hits the usage limit. *Google's Notebook help page names the two Ultra plans by storage, and its plans page names them by price and usage: $99.99 for 5x the AI Pro limits and $199.99 for 20x. Neither page maps one onto the other. Because the plans page says Ultra storage starts at 20 TB, ToolColumn reads the $99.99 plan as the 20 TB one.

By ToolColumn's arithmetic, Pro's limits are four times the standard ones, so the two Ultra plans come to about 20 and 80 times what a free account gets. The multiples compare plans with each other; they do not tell you how many Audio Overviews any of them buys.

One budget for chats, audio and slide decks, refreshed every 5 hours

The compute-based limits started rolling out to consumer accounts on September 2, 2026, replacing limits that refreshed daily. Google says the cost of each action depends on the complexity of your prompt, the length of the chat, the number of sources and the models and features you use. So a long chat over a large notebook leaves less for a Video Overview the same afternoon, and the reverse.

You can see the cost before you spend it. A chat shows a warning such as "You're almost at your AI usage limit" with the time the limit resets, and the Studio panel shows a bar for the expected cost of each output. When the budget runs out, you can wait for the next 5-hour refresh if the weekly limit is not reached, take an alternative output that Gemini Notebook suggests, choose Generate later on the web, which queues the output and may take a couple of hours, or upgrade your Google AI plan. Outputs that Gemini Notebook creates by itself when you first add sources do not count toward the limits.

Google announced that change for consumer accounts. Work and school accounts get Gemini Notebook through a qualifying Google Workspace or Workspace for Education edition, and the Notebook help page says that plans on daily quotas reset after 24 hours and monthly quotas after 30 days, without naming which plans those are. Businesses can also buy Gemini Notebook for Enterprise or a Gemini Enterprise plan through Google Cloud, which Google describes as 5 times or more the notebook outputs, without a per-plan table.

Plus for more sources, Pro for daily audio and video

Stay on Free while your projects fit in 50 sources and you make an Audio Overview now and then. If a project outgrows 50 sources, Google AI Plus is the cheapest way past the cap: $4.99 a month doubles it to 100 sources and doubles the usage limits. Google AI Pro at $19.99 is the step for research projects of up to 300 sources, or for generating overviews most days on four times the standard limits. Ultra makes sense for Gemini Notebook alone only if Pro's limits run out within the week.

Two Google pages describe Pro differently. The plans page promises "5x more Audio Overviews, notebooks, and more", while the Notebook help page sets Pro's usage at four times the standard limits. The notebook count does rise fivefold, from 100 to 500, so treat the help page's 4x as the figure for usage.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Gemini Notebook the same as NotebookLM?

Yes. Google announced on July 16, 2026 that NotebookLM is renamed Gemini Notebook, with the new name rolling out over the following weeks. It stays a standalone product, old links redirect, and its higher limits come with Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra.

How many sources can I add to a notebook on the free plan?

50 per notebook, in up to 100 notebooks. Google AI Plus raises that to 100 sources in 200 notebooks, Google AI Pro to 300 sources in 500 notebooks, and Google AI Ultra to 500 or 600 sources depending on the Ultra plan. Sharing a notebook does not change any collaborator's source limit.

How many Audio Overviews can I make a day in Gemini Notebook?

Google no longer publishes a daily number. The compute-based limits that started rolling out to consumer accounts on September 2, 2026 refresh every 5 hours until a weekly limit, and their cost depends on your prompts, chat length, sources and the features you use. Settings, then Usage, shows how much you have left.

What does Google AI Pro add to Gemini Notebook?

Four times the standard usage limits, 300 sources per notebook instead of 50, 500 notebooks instead of 100, higher access to Gemini models and priority access to new features. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month in the US.
